The Ultimate Raw Hair

Extension Care Guide

Raw hair extensions are the highest quality hair available because the hair has never been chemically processed or coated in silicone. The cuticles remain fully intact and aligned, allowing the hair to behave naturally.

Because the hair is completely natural, it must be treated just like real hair growing from the scalp.

With the correct care routine, raw hair extensions can last 3-5 years or longer.

Understanding How Raw Hair Behaves

Unlike processed extensions, raw hair reacts naturally to:

  • moisture levels

  • weather conditions

  • styling habits

  • friction from clothing

This is completely normal and actually indicates that the hair is authentic raw donor hair.

Processed hair often appears extremely smooth at first because the hair has been coated with silicone. Raw hair instead relies on proper conditioning and moisture.

The Most Important Rule: Moisture

Moisture is the key to maintaining beautiful raw hair.

If raw hair lacks moisture it may feel:

  • slightly dry

  • less smooth when brushing

  • harder to detangle

This does not mean the hair is damaged. It simply means the hair needs deep moisture conditioning.

Simple Moisture Routine

  1. Wash with a moisturisng shampoo

  2. Apply a deep moisturising mask conditioner. We love Osmo Deep Moisture conditioner and Aussie Deep Moisture Conditioner

  3. Leave the conditioner on for 30-45 mins preferably with heat and wash out

  4. Use a deep moisture leave in curl cream

  5. Apply a small amount of a frizz serum to the ends. We love Paul Smith Super skinny serum.

Focus moisture on the mid lengths and ends, not the wefts.

How Often To Wash Raw Hair Extensions

Raw hair should typically be washed every 7-10 days.

However, frequency depends on lifestyle.

Wash more often if you:

  • exercise frequently

  • use heavy styling products

  • live in humid climates

Wash less often if the hair remains clean and soft.

Washing Tips

Always wash the hair in a downward motion.

Avoid:

  • scrubbing

  • twisting the hair

  • piling the hair on top of your head.

Weather and Climate Effects

Because raw hair is natural, it can respond to the environment.

Humidity

Humidity can cause the hair to become:

  • fuller

  • slightly frizzier

  • more textured

This is normal.

To control humidity:

  • apply a light serum

  • use anti humidity styling products

Cold Weather

Cold weather can remove moisture from the hair.

To maintain softness:

  • deep condition every 2-3 weeks

  • apply oil to the ends of the hair

Wind

Wind can cause the hair to tangle.

protect the hair by:

  • wearing it in a loose braid

  • gently brushing afterwards

Fabric Friction and Dryness

Many people do not realise that clothing can affect hair health.

Fabric such as:

  • wool

  • polyester

  • rough knit fabrics

can absorb moisture and create friction on the hair ends.

How to protect the hair

  • wear silk or satin scarves under coats

  • avoid constant rubbing against jackets

  • braid hair loosely in windy conditions

Protecting The Wefts

Protecting the wefts is essential for extending the lifespan of your extensions.

Never Cut The Wefts/ Minimal Cutting

  • Shedding

  • weakening of the hair bundle

Instead, the weft should always be folded during installation.

Never Sew Through The Weft

The needle should always go around the weft, not through it.

Sewing through the weft damages the structure of the hair and can cause shedding over time.

Correct installation is one of the most pragmatic ways to ensure your hair lasts for years.

Trimming The Ends

Just like natural hair, raw hair extensions benefit from occasional trimming.

Trim the ends approximately every 12-16 weeks to maintain fullness and softness.

This removes dry ends and keeps the hair looking healthy.

Night Care

Night protection is essential to prevent dryness and tangling.

Before sleeping:

  • brush the hair gently

  • braid loosely or tie in a ponytail

  • wear a silk or satin bonnet

This reduces friction and helps the hair retain moisture.

Heat Styling

Raw hair can be curled, straightened and styled.

However, excessive heat can dry the hair over time.

Best practise include:

  • always using heat protectant

  • using moderate heat settings

  • deep conditioning regularly

Caring for Wavy and Curly Raw Hair Extension

Wavy and curly textures are more prone to dryness and tangling than straight hair because of the way the strands are shaped and how moisture travels down the hair shaft. Unlike straight, natural oils from the scalp don’t travel as easily through bends and coils, so moisture loss happens faster.

For curly and wavy raw hair extensions, a moisture focused routine is essential to maintain softness, definition and longevity.

Everyday Care Routine

  • Wet & Detangle Daily

Start each day by lightly misting your hair with water or a curl refresher spray. Gently detangle using your fingers or a wide tooth comb, always beginning from the ends and working upwards to avoid breakage and preserve the curl shape.

  • Apply Moisture & Styling Products

While the hair is still damp:

    • Use a moisturising curl cream and a lightweight serum to nourish and define the waves or curls.

    • If you want extra hold or definition, apply a curl jelly or curl defining gekl, this helps shape curls with our crunchiness

Air Dry & Don’t Touch Whilst Drying

Air drying preserves your natural curl pattern. Avoid trouching, scrunching excessively or brushing while the hair is drying, as this can cause frizz and loosen the curl formation.

Weekly Washing & Deep Moisture

  • Wash Every 5-7 Days

  • Curly hair requires more frequent moisture replenishment than straight hair, but washig too often with harsh products can strip hydration. Aim to wash every 5-7 days using:

  • Sulfate free shampoo to gently cleanse without removing softness

  • A rich moisturising conditioner focused on mid lengths and ends

    Deep Moisture Mask (30+ minutes)

Curly and wavy hair thrives when given time to deeply hydrate. Include a deep conditioning hair mask at least once a week. Leave it on for 30+ minutes to allow the nourishing ingredients to penetrate the hair shaft, this helps lock in moisture and reduce frizz.

Why Moisture Matters More For Curly Hair

Curly strands naturally lose hydration faster because their spiral structure makes it harder for oils to travel down the hair. Without moisture, curly hair can become:

  • dry and brittle

  • frizzy and undefined

  • more prone to tangling

  • fragile and more likely to shed

Raw curly extensions do not produce natural oils, so hydration must come from your care routine. Using leave ins, serums, creams and masks helps mimic that oil distribution and keep curls soft and alive.

Expect More Shedding Than with Straight Textures

Because curly hair requires more handling, it's normal to experience slightly more hair loss than straight textures, particularly during detangling or washing. This is a sign of poor quality hair, its natural result of working with curls, which require gentler and more frequent detangling. Handling the hair gently, always detangling when wet and moisturised , will minimise this.

Bonus Tips for Curly & Wavy Hair

  • Never brush dry curls- always detangle when wet with conditioner or mist for slip

  • Use a microfibre towel or cotton T shirt to blot away excess water- rubbing can disturb curl pattern

  • Protect during sleep with a silk/satin bonnet or braid- this reduces friction and preserves moisture.

In summery: Wavy and curly raw hair needs consistent moisture, gentle detangling, and careful washing. A daily routine of wetting, moisturising and low manipulation drying, paired with a twice weekly or weekly wash and deep conditioning session, will keep curls defined, soft and long lasting.
